BOOKSHELF| my comfort books.

img_3316“I have a shelf of comfort books, which I read when the world closes in on me or something untoward happens.”

There are a number of reasons we gravitate towards certain books.  Something appeals, something clicks, something draws us in.  Certain books we end up going back to because they take us back to a certain time or a different world, or they make us smile and laugh.  Each in its own way brings us some form of comfort.  These are the books on my shelf that I would consider my comfort books:

Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
This series has everything for me: childhood memories of eagerly awaiting the next book, an amazing world of magic and wizardry, endearing characters, captivating story lines.  It’s #1 on any list for me.

A Robot in the Garden by Deborah Install
A sweet little story that stole my heart.  A man, a little robot, an adventure, and an unexpected friendship.

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
An incredible galaxy that you can’t help but get lost in.  A crew of nine diverse characters of different species journey through space creating tunnels/shortcuts.

Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie
I love a good Agatha Christie mystery and this is a favourite of mine.  A train full of suspects, a murder, a good ol’ “who done it?”

The Unfortunate Decisions of Dahlia Moss by Max Wirestone
In the mystery category, this is such a fun read.  This book is full of humour and the perfect light read.  You can’t go wrong hanging out with Dahlia Moss.

The Humans by Matt Haig
The ironies and contradictions of being human.  An alien sent to destroy evidence of a significant discovery by a University professor, takes over his body and life, and learns about life as a human.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (and other concerns) by Mindy Kaling
In the non-fiction family this is one of my favourites.  I love Mindy’s sense of humour and this book made me laugh many times.

Vicious by V.E. Schwab
I read this very recently but it fast became one of my absolute favourites.  A rivalry between two former best friends, an intriguing story, well-developed characters, a huge page turner.

What are your comfort books?

  1. One of my goals for the new year is to read an Agatha Christie book. I’m so curious to see if I’ll like her books as well. As for my comfort books, they are:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and also the Goblet of Fire
    Eat, Pray, Love
In the Hand of the Goddess by Tamora Pierce
    Those are the top ones.

    1. Oh yes, Eat Pray Love! I’ve been meaning to re-read it. I definitely recommend The Murder on the Orient Express, it’s one of her bests for sure. I haven’t read In the Hand of the Goddess…just looked it up and it looks really good. On to the tbr list it goes!

      1. The Song of the Lioness books are really great. Just bear in mind that they’re Pierce’s first books. The story is great but the execution sometimes turn readers off, especially older readers. It’s a YA novel. Yup, I think I’ll read The Murder on the Orient Express first. It seems to get the most praise.

  2. Ooh Love your comfort books! Mine would definitely be Harry Potter as well, the Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and the Sabriel books by Garth Nix. Probably also the Narnia books and anything I read as a child ^_^

      1. Oh my gosh you must! The Sabriel books are a little creepy… >.> but I love the character dynamic! And the Historian is SO GOOD – if you like eastern europe style travelogues and well-written Vampire fiction

  3. I only recently realized I had comfort books. When I’m feeling low, I never turned to food, but music and definitely books. Mine would include The Tomorrow When the War Began series and anything by Donald Miller.
