Gracie’s Song tells the story of a young woman who returns to her hometown after a ten-year absence. The reasons she left all those years ago at the age of eighteen are a mystery to everyone in her life: her friends, her family, and even her boyfriend at the time and first love Finn. But as time passed and the distance between her and those closest to her grew, going back to Glenwood became more and more difficult to do. However, after her mother’s death, the time comes for Gracie to make the long overdue trip home and come face to face with everything and everyone she left behind.
This is a sweet, heart-warming, and at times heart-braking story that takes us through an individual’s journey to reconnect, rebuild, and ultimately heal. It goes from present moment and flashes back to past events, highlighting key occurrences in Gracie’s life in Glenwood, which provides insight into her thoughts, actions, and feelings. There is an elegance and a nice flow to the writing that made it enjoyable to read, along with great dialogue that really endeared me to the characters. I appreciated the authentic, real-life quality to the story overall and how it takes its time to unfold and develop. The flashback sections are not clearly defined, which did cause a little bit of confusion at the beginning of the novel, however as the story progresses the jump back in time does become more obvious. Overall, I found Gracie’s Song to be a lovely read with a great theme of hope and finding home.
