Time to wrap-up 2018 and look back on some highs and lows of the year in books. There were books I enjoyed and books I didn’t care for, but my overall reading experience of the year lands in the “just fine” category. Usually I have a hard time narrowing down my favourite books of the year, but this time around there were obvious standouts, which was the case with my least favourites list as well. 🙂
Books I could not, would not put down:
The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
My absolute favourite book of the year was this little romance. Who would have thought! I fell in love with the two main characters and their story. Smart, sexy, and charming, The Kiss Quotient has it all.
An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena
This is my favourite kind of mystery, with a handful of characters in an isolated location, a murder, and the gradual piecing together of clues to find the culprit. An Unwanted Guest truly delivers and gave me all the Agatha Christie vibes along the way.
Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend
Nevermoor was a complete joy to read. It is rare for me to pick up a middle grade book, but this one peaked my interest and I ended up enjoying it immensely.
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
There are aspects of this novel that I normally would not be a big fan of, however the writing is so exceptional that I was completely swept away. One I will absolutely reread many times over.
The Dry by Jane Harper
Not only did I love this novel, but it has given me a new mystery series to look forward to, which follows the main character. It is well-written, suspenseful and I can’t wait to read more from Jane Harper.
Books that missed the mark:
Lethal White by Robert Galbraith
As the much anticipated fourth release in a mystery series, I was counting down to reading this novel. Unfortunately I found it beyond disappointing and I could not get through the six-hundred pages. J. K. Rowling, please stop attempting to write romance. It’s not your thing.
Only Human Sylvain Neuvel
This was a disappointing conclusion to a sci-fi trilogy that lacked the compelling nature of the first two novels. I do still feel that it’s a series worth reading but I couldn’t help but be disappointed with this one.
