Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf

BLOG“And then there was the day when Addie Moore made a call on Louis Waters.”

Addie and Louis are neighbours in the town of Holt, Colorado.  They are in their seventies and both their spouses had passed away many years before and both live alone.  Louis’ daughter and Addie’s son live hours away, and being on their own without family around, the days can seem long and the nights lonely.  On an unexpected visit, Addie makes a proposal that marks the beginning of a sweet, brave and emotional journey.

Sometimes a story comes along that touches you in a very deep and profound way.  Our Souls at Night is one of those stories.  It is sad yet hopeful at the same time.  The honesty of Addie and Louis’ conversations is heartwarming as they talk about their past, their families, and their hopes and desires.

I feel this is one of those novels you should go into without too much outside information or prior opinion and just experience it for yourself.  The book description sums it up best: A spare yet eloquent, bittersweet yet inspiring story of a man and a woman who, in advanced age, come together to wrestle with the events of their lives and their hopes for the imminent future.

Our Souls at Night is the last novel from author Kent Haruf, who passed away before its publication.  It is a heartbreaking, hopeful, and beautiful novel that is truly a special read.

Favourite quote: “I made up my mind I’m not going to pay attention to what people think. I’ve done that for too long – all my life. I’m not going to live that way anymore.”
